CSDC: Theming I

Ben Tiedt did a great job introducing theming Community Server with Chameleon at the Community Server Developer's Conference - and we got video. It's long but great!  If you want to build a custom theme or tweak your existing UI, this is a great video to spend some time with.

Graffiti in Real Time

Ken Robertson is a Telligent developer and spends a few minutes with us in Episode 31 giving a short demo of how easy it is to install and set up Graffiti.  I gathered the following steps from his excellent work:

• 1. Set up web host.
• 2. Change connection string in web.config to point to provided blank file-based db (unless you like the default data).
• 3. FTP small 7.5 MB upload to host
• 4. Grab snack and maybe a Dew
  
• 5. Navigate to site in your favorite browser
  
• 6. Say to yourself, "Boom - now I'm good to go."

Time for REST

TelliCast #30 finds us visiting with Dan Bartels who has spent significant time over the last year working on Community Server's REST API.  REST uses HTTP posts, gets, heads, puts and deletes to manipulate data within a Community Server implementation.

We learn that Dan wrote the REST implementation under, perhaps, a little duress? You can hardly tell...

What's new in CS2008?

In episode 29, José Lema will let us in on some of the new things you'll find in Community Server 2008.  A big focus has been placed on groups and social networking features.  We've revamped private messages by building a new messaging system that breaks such conversations out of forums and makes messaging a stand-alone feature.  We've also brought some concepts from Graffiti into Community Server including UI widgets and drag-and-drop UI manipulation.  So, in short, CS2008 is going to be sweet like so much holiday dessert!

SLDC07 with good people

Tellligent has some great people.  One of the things that makes us great is our involvement in the community (.Net Community, Developer Community, Social Community, et cettera).  Telligent has 2 Microsoft Regional Directors, numerous Microsoft MVPs and ASPInsiders and countless Microsoft and PMI Certified developers and leaders.  This past weekend, I found Telligenti Karthik Hariharan and Deryl Dorsett at the Dallas Silverlight Dev Camp hosted by Chris Koenig from Microsoft at Improving Enterprises.  Tal McMahon presented a great Silverlight overview to get everyone started and the rest of the day was spent hacking and showing off solutions.  In this episode (23), I wanted to find out why Karthik and Deryl wanted to attend the conference and discuss what attributes make a good Telligent employee.

CSDC Wrap

Community Server Developer's Conference was this past weekend and it was great.  We're feverishly trying to get our session videos edited and published so look for those soon.  We really enjoyed having everyone here in Dallas and are looking forward to next year!

In this video, which happens to be TelliCast #20, we catch some session intros and meet with some of the attendees who travelled from all over including Argentina, England and Israel - or as Amy puts it, from all over the country...

CSDC Correction

TelliCast was really great this week wasn't it?  Too bad it was completely wrong...  Ok - not completely but the agenda has changed a bit.  Find the latest agenda at http://csdc.communityserver.org/.

Also, Friday night's festivities are at Fox Sports Grill in Plano, about 5 minutes from Stonebriar.  It's located in Legacy Town Center which is where you'd find the Marriott at Legacy Town Center.
