Best practice and pitfalls to avoid setting up Communities

  • Hi,

I'm a bit of an enthusiastic newbie and am looking for some advice from the old hands here on how to start building our new communities platform.  I have jumped in and have set up a couple of groups that are incredibly active very quickly, and I did this to learn with some trial and error, restricted numbers, and quite quickly so I could see what works and what doesn't.  This has been great so far, but as we build this out I would like to avoid making basic mistakes in how the groups are structured, how you manage potentially large numbers of different interest groups, and how the whole community should hang together.

So, I'm hoping you can help me with some advice, discussion or just links to where I can find information to learn more on this topic.

    Kind regards

    Paul

  • Hi Paul! Welcome to the Telligent community. :) So, are you talking about an internal (used by employees) community? Are you using Telligent Enterprise?

  • Hi Jenn,

Thanks... nice to be part of it and hopefully learn some useful things.  Both... we have use cases for internal and external groups.  I believe we have Telligent Enterprise too.

    Regards

    Paul

  • Hi Jenn... and anyone else reading this ;-)

I wondered if anyone could post a link to any research they are aware of that is publicly available on the internet about the value of tools like Telligent?  I think for anyone actively involved in communites the value is a no brainer... but when you try to explain this to anyone else it's not always so straight forward without being able to demonstrate the success of others.

    So, any ideas?

    Thanks

    Paul

  • Hi Paul! Well, I think if you are starting at ground zero with understanding the difference between social networks (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, etc.) and social community, there's a pretty nice and simple little video here: www.youtube.com/watch  Video is so easy to consume. :) Are you talking about a comparison chart? Comparing the different social platforms? Or something more general that puts metrics around having a social community vs. not?

  • Hi Jenn, I'm more interested in seeing how tools like Telligent have been successful for others, how did they approach the implementation and how did they measure their success?
