Hi, we are working on a TC 5.6 solution that has about 50.000 active users. Is there any best practice on how to enable each user to have a blog and multiple galleries?

Groups are already used (public) for groups of people that discuss particular topics.

Would it be appropriate to create all the user blogs and galleries in the root? Or what would be the best practice?

    I am not sure there is really a best practice in this case.  I also would not do it at the site root, I would use a secondary group under the root.  It really is an organizational preference.
