Security Alert – Hotfix Available to Address Reflective Cross Site Scripting (XSS) Vulnerability

Description

A security notification was made public on August 4th, 2011 demonstrating a Reflective Cross Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability against Telligent Community Server 2008.5 and 2007. Even though the public notification was targeted at Telligent Community Server 2008.5 and 2007 we have found that builds of Telligent Community 5.0 and 5.5 are also impacted. This vulnerability has the potential to allow an attacker to launch an attack against users' with unprotected browsers that will execute arbitrary JavaScript within the context of the vulnerable site. Most modern browsers have extra protections in place that will mitigate this type of reflective XSS attack. Even still, we are taking extra precautions to help you safeguard your deployment.

Telligent takes security very seriously and resolved this issue prior to the date this vulnerability was disclosed. We have recently performed two 3rd party security audits on the two most recent versions of Telligent Community and Telligent Enterprise and absolutely zero critical or high risk vulnerabilities were discovered. Internet Explorer 9 and Firefox 4 Bulletin

In recent weeks, Mozilla and Microsoft announced the availability of their newest browsers. On March 9, 2011, Mozilla announced the Firefox 4 release candidate for Windows, Mac and Linux. On March 14, 2011, Microsoft Corp. announced global availability of Windows Internet Explorer 9.

As a social community software company, we understand our customers' desire to move to the latest and greatest innovations in technology; however, we also want to make sure that we fully test these innovations before recommending them for use with the Telligent Evolution platform. Our product development team is in the process of evaluating Internet Explorer 9, and we will provide support for it in our May hotfix for Telligent Evolution. Although not recommended, customers can run Internet Explorer 9 now in compatibility mode. Instructions for doing so can be found here.

Early testing of the release candidate for Firefox 4 did not result in any significant issues; however, Telligent will not evaluate it as a candidate for support until its development is complete and we test the final version. As a reminder, the Telligent Evolution platform provides broad support for multiple browsers including Internet Explorer 7, Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox 3. A full list of recommended and supported browsers can be found here.

Microsoft ASP.NET Security Bulletin

On September 17, Microsoft issued a Security Advisory for a vulnerability that exists in ASP.NET. At this time we encourage you to follow Microsoft's advice and apply the update released on September 28.
