Controlling Spam with Telligent Evolution

Telligent wants to help you understand what can be done to mitigate spam and control the quality of information being entered into your public communities. As such, we have a created a best practices guide that can be used to help protect communities running Telligent Community 6.0 from unwanted spam posts.

As always, if issues are encountered going through these best practices or if a spam issue comes up within your community we want to know! Please open a support ticket with us so we can work with you to protect your communities.

Video Transcoding Now Available

We are excited to announce the availability of Video Transcoding, a free module for use with Telligent Community 6.x or Telligent Enterprise 3.x. This module converts videos from a large variety of formats into an HTML5-supported format for improved playback in modern browsers. Your audience's user experience is optimized based on the version of browser they are using to participate in your community. If their browser is enabled for HTML5 video viewing, they can watch videos through an optimized HTML5 viewer, but if they are using an older browser version that does not support HTML5, they can still watch the video through a Flash-based viewer. As videos are being transcoded, the video can still be viewed in its original format.

The video transcoding extension is available today for download from the Telligent Marketplace. We have provided a number of resources for you to guide you through installation, configuration, use and troubleshooting depending on the product you are using:

Telligent Community 6.1 and Telligent Enterprise 3.1

On April 4th, we made available the latest versions of our online community software, Telligent Community 6.1 and Telligent Enterprise 3.1. These latest versions introduce four new API capabilities, a user experience improvement with friend requests, and bug fixes to customer and partner reported issues since the launch of Telligent Community 6.0 and Telligent Enterprise 3.0.

Highlights:

API Enhancements:
- Update extended attributes for any application, content post, user or a group which benefits developers who need to store, retrieve and update additional information about specific content, applications, groups or users.
- Retrieve profile field groups and profile fields, providing additional access to key information needed by extensibility developers.
- Understand when a user’s profile information has changed so that you can pull only the new profile values instead of cycling through all profile fields to determine what is new.
- Pull the raw body for any type of content post to get access to a version of the text that can be changed.
User Experience Enhancements:
- Improved friend connections by simplifying and speeding up requests. You now type a quick note or just use the default text for the request and click to send.
Bug Fixes to customer and partner reported issues including:
- One click access to moderate forum posts from email
- Correct handling of forum threads with tags containing single apostrophes
- Improvements in email templates and subscriptions

Security Alert – Hotfix Available to Address Reflective Cross Site Scripting (XSS) Vulnerability

Description

A security notification was made public on August 4th, 2011 demonstrating a Reflective Cross Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability against Telligent Community Server 2008.5 and 2007. Even though the public notification was targeted at Telligent Community Server 2008.5 and 2007 we have found that builds of Telligent Community 5.0 and 5.5 are also impacted. This vulnerability has the potential to allow an attacker to launch an attack against users' with unprotected browsers that will execute arbitrary JavaScript within the context of the vulnerable site. Most modern browsers have extra protections in place that will mitigate this type of reflective XSS attack. Even still, we are taking extra precautions to help you safeguard your deployment.

Telligent takes security very seriously and resolved this issue prior to the date this vulnerability was disclosed. We have recently performed two 3rd party security audits on the two most recent versions of Telligent Community and Telligent Enterprise and absolutely zero critical or high risk vulnerabilities were discovered.
