A few things changing in 2009... a must read!

  • Here's a list of three important changes for 2009:

    1. Community Server 2009 Professional will not support groups. Note: Customers who have purchased 2008.5 and earlier will *always* have a group options.
    2. NNTP – This add-on will no longer be updated and supported by Telligent. We will release the source code after 2009 ships so that customers who depend on it and still use it.
    3. Search – Search Barrel the only search option in express the current default search option in Professional and Enterprise is being phased out. We are making a very significant investment to take Enterprise Search to the next level and will offer a much more comprehensive search option in Community Server 2009. We have always shared the source to Search Barrel so users are free to update it on their own as necessary

  • Will the updated version of Enterprise search be more extensible for third party applications built on the CS framework?

  • Hi,

Will CS 2008 professional license holders still be able to buy more groups for the CS 2009 site?

    Cheers,

Will the updated version of Enterprise search be more extensible for third party applications built on the CS framework?

Yes, the new version of search will have a "true" API to making pushing content in and out of search very simple. This is one of the main scenarios driving this work.

  • I applaud the route you're taking by increasing CS's search capabilities as for me that is the biggest weakness in the current product.

The new search engine will be strictly available to paying customers and not incorporated in the express edition?

Why was there a decision to add groups in 2008 just to remove them in 2009? Is there anything that will replace groups?

  • Groups are not being removed from the product, they're becoming an Enterprise-only feature.

Will CS 2008 professional license holders still be able to buy more groups for the CS 2009 site?

Very good question, Robert.  Currently 25 seems like enough groups for me, but at some point I might need more.  My goal for using groups is to create a group for every language for which I have translators.  I'd hate to have a rock hard limit of 25 languages, if the translators were to be available.

So, I'll ask it again.  Will 2008 pro license holder still be able to buy more groups for the 2009 site?  Also, I'll ask another question:  Would you consider removing the group number limit for 2008 pro license holders as they move into CS 2009?  This would be a nice gesture, in contrast what seems like a series of hostile gestures that seem to want to squeeze us out!

This is a little confusing.  Are you saying that anyone whos first purchase of CS is 2009 Professional will not get groups, but if you have bought 2008.5 or earlier, then when you upgrade to 2009 Professional you will still have groups?

That is amusing.  When I complained that RSS does not work for forums I was told to use NNTP instead.  And I was only trying to use RSS because there is no 'go to first unread post' functionality in CS.

Will the express edition still allow 5 groups ?

  • no, the express edition will no longer support groups or enterprise search. for search you'll lbe able to use live/google/yahoo search.

  • You mean no more integrated search engine ?

Did this get answered?  For reference, the original question was:
