Moving file storage from the database to the file system

I'm getting ready to make the haul from 2007.1 to 5.5 and just realized that the reason the database is so huge is because all attachments have been stored in the database.  Is there a way for me to move all those buggers to the file system pre or post upgrade?

I know I can change the default location for future uploads, but I'm hoping for a way to retroactively do this.

    The 2007.1 to 2008 upgrade *will* move all attachments out of the database as CS2008 removed support for attachments in the database (for the very reason you mentioned)
