Key Blogging Features and Capabilities

The tables below discuss some of the core capabilities found in the Community Server blogging application.

Blogging Scenarios

Blogs are a powerful tool for enabling individuals to share their opinions and solicit feedback. Blogs also make for a very, very simply content management solution. Community Server’s blogging application is a proven multi-faceted tool that easily supports 1,000s of blogs and can grow with your organization’s blogging needs.

Community Interaction

Key Features

Feature	Description
Search	The search capabilities are a shared feature and are detailed further on the capabilities page. Search support for blogs is rich, and access to search results is filtered by permissions.
Search Engine Optimized (SEO)	Content served is optimized for search engines. Keywords are included in meta-tags, content uses clean HTML, and URLs are formatted to include subject keywords
Content Mirroring	A unique capability of Community Server's blogging engine is that it enables a blog to mirror any syndicated (RSS) available URL. Content from external sites can be brought in and made available for searching
Content Tagging	Enables authors to use keywords to "tag" their content and then provides tools for readers to browse tags or even subscribe to tags. These capabilities are both site wide and/or blog specific.
Post Drafts	Allows posts to be saved in draft form without being published.
Publish Date Options	Allows posts to be automatically published (go live) at a specified future date/time.
Posting through Email	Using Enterprise Email Integration authors can write content using any email capable device or application (mobile phones, Blackberry, Microsoft Outlook, etc.)
SPAM Management for Comments	Rules engine that automatically reviews and scores all incoming content. Content suspected of being SPAM (unsolicited content) is either automatically sent to a moderation queue or is deleted. While this applies to blogs it is also a common capability for all content added to a Community Server system.
Blog Rolls	Tools for managing lists of URLs
Ratings	Rating capabilities exist for each blog post.
WYSIWYG Editors	Rich, what-you-see-is-what-you-get editors that simplify the entire experience of authoring content. Ensures that knowledge of HTML or other "code" is not required.

Mobile Blogging	Supported through Enterprise Email Integration; see Posting through Email above.
Pages	Supports easily creating stand-alone pages or articles that aren't published as blog posts. Great for articles or static content.
Cross Posting	Allows for Community Server's blog engine to post to multiple sources; great for when moving from other blogging or publishing platforms, as it allows all content sources to stay in sync.
Ping Support	Service to support alerting sites, such as Google's Blog Search, that their blog has been updated and can be re-indexed.
Google Analytics	Built-in support for easily enabling analytics engines such as Google's free "Google Analytics"
Ad Support	Easily enable any ad engine or Google text ads
FeedBurner	Enables all RSS syndication to be managed through feedburner.com integration providing robust statistics on syndication usage.

Media Support

Feature	Description
Photos	Easily add photos through WYSIWYG editors in the Photo Gallery feature of Community Server or through any blogging tools including email.
Videos	Supports inline videos that can be embedded within blog posts
Podcasting	Supports attachments that can be syndicated as part of the blog post. A common example is attaching an audio or video stream (known as podcasting or video-casting). Additionally includes support for enclosures.
Attachments	Supports virtually any attachment type; the types of attachments are controlled by a list of allowed file extensions.

Customized Presentation	Community Server supports an extensive themes engine that was designed from the ground up to enable designers to have complete fidelity from design to implementation
Dynamic Themes	Supports dynamic themes that enable each user to have a personalized "look-and-feel" for his or her blog. New themes can be added, and existing themes can just as easily be removed.
Style Sheets	Full control over style sheet information (advanced users) gives control over all aspects of presentation layout.

Community Server 2.0

Upgrading to version 2.0 from version 1.2

To upgrade Community Server installation from version 1.2 to version 2.0, follow the steps described below. Please note, the directions below only account for migration of the data from version 1.2 to version 2.0. Any Theme changes will need to be manually ported between versions; while theme changes should work we do recommend testing them first.

Step 1 - Back Up Existing Site and Data

Before upgrading it's highly recommended that you make a back-up copy of all related web and database files. It is recommended that you work off a copy of the data, not the live data.

Step 2 - Deploy new Web Files

Create a new web directory and copy Community Server 2.0 files into this directory. For example, a common technique for managing versions of a web application would be to create a single master directory with sub-directories:

\web\version1.2\ \web\version2.0\

Rather than copying files over the version1.2 directory Internet Information Service (IIS) can simply be pointed to the new directory. This way there is no loss of files.

Step 3 - Edit web.config

Edit the web.config file with your application and database connection string details if they need to change from the default that is provided.

Step 4 - Run SQL Scripts

Run the following sql scripts against your Community Server database to update the database (Using Query Analyser or another equally capable SQL execution environment.

Make sure you have the correct database chosen in Query Analyzer before executing the script:

This file can be found within your Community Server installation directory:

...\SQLScripts\CS_1.1_to_2.0_upgrade.sql

Step 5 - Common Settings

If you require "www." to appear before the domain name in your URL - edit the CommunityServer.config file, line 72; set "wwwStatus" = "Require".If you have multiple communities running, make sure to edit the CommunityServer.config file, line 73; set "enableVirtualization" = "True"

Step 6 - Restart Internet Services Manager

Restart the website. (In Internet Services Manager, right-click the website and choose "Start")

You should now be able to access your Community Server site running version 2.0.

This is a walkthrough of some common techniques for creating your own welcome message.

Below is the text I am going to use for the new welcome message for the purpose of this walk through.

Welcome to Clown Fish World

Thank you for visiting our community site dedicated to all aquarists who keep and breed the charming Clown fish. This is a self help community where we offer practical advice and knowledge on keeping these delightful fish in pristine health. Take your time, look around at what we have to offer and were sure that you will want to join our community.

Benefits of joining our community

Ask and answer questions in our forums

Your own blog where you can keep an online journal is available on request

Your own gallery will be automatically created when you join where you can upload up to 10 Mbytes of photos

Something you would like to see or any questions? then contact us here.

This will be the finished welcome message.

Open the content editor by double clicking in the welcome region. Select and delete all the current content so that the editor window is empty of all text.

At this point we will cover something you should not do, that is copy and paste directly from Microsoft Word. To show you why, I select and copy (Ctrl-C) the above text and paste it (CTRL-V) directly into the normal content editor window.

As you can see in the above, all looks ok. Click on the HTML editor button:

The above shows all the Microsoft specific formatting that has been transferred. Non Microsoft browsers may have problems displaying this formatting. Additionally we will not have any of our Community Server formatting applied. If you do paste from Microsoft Word then either use the paste from Word button (this still may not remove all formatting correctly):

Or paste directly into the HTML editor which will remove all formatting applied to the text.

Web Install Wizard

Web Installation Wizard

The Web-based installer for Community Server allows you to configure Community Server remotely through a web browser. This is the recommended configuration option when installing to a web host where you do not have remote desktop access.

The web-based installation process assumes you have at least FTP access to your remote web server.

The Web Installation Wizard will:

Create the Community Server database with Microsoft SQL Server
Configure the ASP.NET web application settings in your Community Server web.config file

Step 1 - Download Community Server Web Install

Download the Community Server Web installation package from get.communityserver.com/download/:

After downloading you will need to unzip the Community Server files and FTP them to your web directory on your host's web server using FTP.

Step 2 - Enable the Web Installer

In the Community Server root folder find the file \Installer\default.aspx and edit the line that has:

bool INSTALLER_ENABLED = false;

Change it to true:

bool INSTALLER_ENABLED = true;

This should be done before you upload the files to your web server so that the installer will be able to run.

When you are done using the web installer, the value should either be switched back to "false". It is recommended that you remove the 'Installer' directly entirely.

Step 3 - Copy files and assign privileges

Ensure all web files for Community Server have been copied to the proper directory on your web server. This directory should also be configured as a web application in IIS with the "Read" and "Run Scripts" checkboxes checked for permissions. For the "web" folder, give the ASPNET (or NETWORK SERVICE) account read privileges. Then, for that same user, do the following:

Give "Full Control" privileges on the following folders (found under "web"):

blogs/files
photos/cache
photos/storage
files/storage
Utility/RankIcons
Utility/RoleIcons

These settings should already be configured for you by your host (ISP). If they are not, you will need to contact your ISP to apply these settings or your Community Server installation may not function properly.

Step 4 - Create the database

Before you begin with the remote installation process you will need an empty database for the Web Installation to install to. You will also need to give 'public' and 'db_owner' role privileges to the login that the Community Server application will use when connecting to this database.

These database settings should already be configured for you by your host (ISP). If they are not, you will need to contact your ISP to apply these settings or your Community Server installation may not function properly.

Step 5 - Run Installer

Open a web browser and go to the installer folder for your server. For example, "http://www.example.com/cs/installer". This should display a screen similar to the one shown below:

Step 6 - License Agreement

Review and agree to the Community Server License terms:

Step 7 - Database Configuration

The SQL Server credentials given here will be used to create the Community Server database schema and also used to generate content to be copied to the web.config file and used by Community Server when it connects to your Community Server database:

Windows Authentication is recommended.

Step 8 - Choose the Database

Using the credentials provided in the previous step you will be shown a list of available databases. Choose the database you created (or that your host provided):

Step 9 - Installation Options

Choose which actions you would like the installation to perform. It is recommended to leave all selected:

Step 10 - Create new Community

As part of the installation process, a new community will be created for you. This step also allows you to choose a Username, Password, and email address for the system administrator account that you will use when you first access Community Server's administrative features such as the Control Panel:

Checking the "Create Sample Data" checkbox will cause the web installer to create a sample blog, sample forum post, sample photo gallery and other sample data for your site.

Step 11 - Installation Complete

Now that you have provided the installer with everything it needs, it will create the database schema, configure the connectionstrings.config file content and display it for you to copy. It will also provide a link (highlighted below) for you to follow to navigate to your new community site.

Step 12 - Updating connectionstrings.config

Per the instructions provided on the final web installer screen, copy the contents displayed to your connectionstrings.config file, found in the "Web" directory of your installation.

Copy the content:

Paste it in your web.config file found in the root of your Community Server installation:

Step 13 - Remove Web Installer

Delete the "Installer" directory from your file system!

Creating a new forum post

If you are a new member to a community spend some time familiarizing yourself with the forums that are available. You are more likely to generate a response by creating your post in the correct forum. When you have decided which forum you are going to create the post in, click the forum within the forum group to enter it.

Click "Write a New Post".

This launches the community content editor. With the "Compose Tab" selected, enter a subject (title) for your forum post. Click once in the subject text area to enable text entry. Next click once in the message area and enter the post content.

You can now optionally add tags by entering your tags in the tags text entry control.

Alternatively click the "Select Tags" button to see tags which have been used before. Select the tag you wish to use, click "OK" to apply the tag or click "Cancel".

Click the options tab. Note that you may have more or less options depending upon your user rights within the forum as determined by your administrator.

File attachment: If you are allowed to attach a file to the post and you wish to do so click the "Add/Update". Currently the community only supports a single attachment per post. If the administrator has allowed you this functionality, you will be only able to upload files of certain types and up to a certain size. Contact your administrator for details
Do not allow replies: If you select this option then no one will be allowed to reply to your post. This causes the thread to become locked
Email me replies to this post: Select this option to be emailed copies of any replies to the post if you so wish. Clear it to disable any email replies
Stickiness: If you have the rights to mark a thread as sticky then select the period that the thread should remain at the top of the forum. This will pin the post so that it will be displayed as the first post of the forum for that period of time. If a newer post is created and marked as sticky it will appear above the post you are creating. The final option in the drop down list is "Announcement", select this to pin the post permanently
Post Icon: Allows you to insert an emoticon from the displayed list into the subject title

You can add a Poll if you have permission. Click the Poll tab (if there is no tab, you do not have permission). Click "Include a Poll in this Post". Enter the poll question. You can also optionally enter a poll description. Add each answer or option for members to vote for by entering the answer and clicking "Add Answer". You can alter the order the options appear in the post by using the up and down arrows. Finally you can cause the poll to expire by entering the number of days that members can vote and participate in the poll.

To insert the poll into the post, return to the "Compose" tab. Enter the text [Poll] at the position you wish the poll to appear. Click the "Preview" tab. This allows you to preview your post. Note that if you see a word appearing as a series of asterisks "***" you have used a word the administrator has banned from use on the forums.

You can even embed video in a post if the administrator has allowed you permission to do so. Click the "Video" tab (if there is no tab, you do not have permission). Click "Include Video". Note you should contact the community administrator for supported video types.

Video URL: Enter the URL of the video
Preview Image URL: If you have a preview image URL for the view enter it here
Video Duration: Enter the duration of the video
Video Width: Enter the width of the video in pixels
Video Height: Enter the height of the video in pixels

Click the "Compose" tab. Enter the text [Video] at the position you wish the video to appear.

Click the "Preview" tab. Note that if you did not provide a preview URL a default one is used. Click the "Play" button.

The video is played within the body of the post.

When you reviewed your post click the "Post" button to submit the post to the forum. The post should appear as the first post below any sticky posts. If this does not happen check your profile settings.

It will also appear as the latest active and unanswered post.

Howto Change Email From Addresses

Currently, most of the emails that originate from a Community Server site use the admin users email address in the from address. This means that when a user joins your site, the welcome email will appear as though it is from the admin users email account. However, you may want to have these emails appear as though they are from a different address. For example, for new user accounts you could have the email sent appear as though it is from accounts@yoursite.com.

In order to change any of the email from addresses you will follow the same basic steps. In the example above you change the new account email from address. To accomplish this task you can follow these steps:

1. Open Languages\en-US\emails\emails.xml with a text editor

2. Find the email template for NewUserAccountCreated

3. Change the following line from:
<fromAddress>[adminemail]</fromAddress>
to
<fromAddress>accounts@yoursite.com</fromAddress>

Once you save your emails.xml file the next time a user joins your site they will receive an email from accounts@yoursite.com. You can also change the fromName, for example this could simply have the value of 'Yoursite Accounts'. You can follow these same basic steps to change any other type of email templates from address.

Community Server 2.1 SP3 SDK

Upgrading to the Community Server 2.1 SP3 SDK

Inside of the src folder you will find the files that have changed in the SDK. These files are organized
in the same folder structure as your existing SDK, which allows you to easily merge the two. Please complete the
following steps in order to upgrade your existing 2.1 RTM SDK to the SP3 version.

Step 1 - Download 2.1 SP3 Upgrade Package

Download the Community Server 2.1 SP3 upgrade package from http://communityserver.org/files/folders/cs_service_packs/default.aspx. The SP3 package includes a src folder that contains all of the changed source files that you can use to upgrade an existing 2.1 SDK.

Step 2 - Copy src Files

Copy the folders from the src folder in the SP3 package to your SDK source folder.

Step 3 - Merge Modified Source Files

You should overwrite any existing files if you have not modified them. If you have modified any of the
source code that has been updated by the SP3 then you should use a tool such as BeyondCompare or WinMerge
to find the differences and merge the two files.

Step 4 - Compile Solution

Once you are done copying the new files you should open the solution and build it to make sure that
all projects build successfully.

Bullet Point (Unordered) Lists

To create a bullet point list, position the cursor on a new line within the editor and click the bullet point button.

As you type the list is created. Pressing the return/enter key will start a new bullet point item.

When your list is complete, to stop the bullet point list with the cursor on the last empty bullet point click the bullet point button.

The editor will clear the last bullet point and the cursor will return to the leftmost position in the editor.

To clear bullet point formatting select the list as shown and click the bullet point button.

To set existing text as bullet point text, select the text and click the bullet point button.

To change the bullet point list to a numbered list, select the list and click the numbered list button.

How to use User Controls with Chameleon

Theming in Community Server 2007 with Chameleon is centered around regular ASPX pages instead of hundreds of skin files as in Community Server 2.1 and earlier. This makes it nice and easy to find which files to edit if you want to make a theme change, but unfortunately this makes some of the theme pages quite large.

There is a way to getting the best of both worlds. All of the new Chameleon controls support inline templates which allow you to control (and override) markup and child controls used. They also allow you to take the inline markup (and child controls) and move them to an external UserControl file.

So here is a quick summary:

Copy the contents of a template (ItemTemplate) to a UserControl file. (no code required)
Add a reference to your new user control in your ASPX page
Add your UserControl as the only control in your template

As an added bonus, you can also optionally add properties to your new UserControls which may help reuse them in other places or simply add a little extra functionality.

Step 5 – Adding an Image

Next let's add an image to the welcome message. Save any changes up to this point. Navigate to Control Panel, Administration, Settings, Manage Site Files. Click "Create New Folder". Give the folder a meaningful name, such as "HomePageFiles" (Tip: avoid spaces in the name as they are not URL friendly and only use alphanumeric characters). Click "Save".

Click the new folder name.

Click "Browse". Select the image file. Click "Upload".

Return to the home page of your site and launch the content editor for the welcome text. Click to position the cursor at the insertion point.

Click the content selector tool.

Click the "Site Files" tab.

Expand the new folder that the image was uploaded to. Select the image, click "OK".

As my image is rather large, there is still some work to be done. Remember that it is best to scale the image to the correct size before uploading it, however we will continue with a image which is to large in case you do not have a image editing tool to do this.

Returning to the HTML editor, I use the width and height modifiers to make the image a quarter of the original size. When I inserted the image this is what the content selector inserted into the HTML.

In this instance I do not want the visitors to the site to be able to click on the image and be redirected to a blank page showing the image so I change the text by removing the text in red above to which leaves:

Alternatively you could redirect users to, for example your forums by replacing the href URLS as shown:

Note as well that the editor inserts non standard HTML elements mce_href and mce_src in the image statement. We recommend that you do not remove the mce markers; however you should keep both the HTML and MCE_ entries the same for each HTML block, i.e. if you change one URL then you must change the other.

After adding the height and width specifications for the image the HTML section is:

After closing the editor and saving any changes the welcome area is now as shown:

Now we have an image but we now need to format the layout of the first paragraph and the image. To do this we will use CSS as an override to create a new class to apply to the image. On your site navigate to Control Panel, Administration, Settings, Theme Configuration. Check that the theme your site is being displayed with is selected.

Click the Custom Styles (Advanced) tab. Enter the following text in the text box control.

.HPWFloatLeft is the name of the CSS class we are creating. If you wish to use your own name it is worth checking as it is not already defined in the /themes/selectedsitetheme/style/common.css. To check that the name is unique: open the file in a text editor and search (without the prefixed dot) for the name. Using a name that is already defined may cause strange effects on your site.

The float statement causes whatever element it is applied to it becomes a block box. This box can be moved to the left or the right.

Padding places an invisible border round the element, in this case of 2 pixels. Click "Save".

Exit the control panel and return to your sites homepage. Open the content editor for the welcome content part. Click the HTML button.

Add the class statement to the IMG element using the name of the class you have just created. Note we do not include the prefixing dot.

Note that when you click "Update" and return to the content editor, as it has no knowledge of the CSS class, the display is not formatted as we wish.

However when we click "Save Changes" and view the home page:

As we have created a CSS class to control the display of our image we can now make any fine tuning adjustments through the "Custom Styles" tab of the theme configuration. For example to increase the white space around the image increase the padding value. However to large a value (the below is 10px) can lead to undesirable results.

You can put a border round the image and push the text block away to the right by using:

If you want the image on the right, then simply use float: right; however you may wish to use a different CSS class name. A name that implies a left float which is actually right may be a little confusing!

In order to enable anonymous comments for your blog, two steps must be taken.

1. Enable Site Level Anonymous Comments - anonymous comments must be enabled globally by an administrator. This can be done by setting the "Enable Anonymous Posting" option to "Yes" under the Post Settings options:

2. Enable Blog Level Anonymous Comments - Anonymous comments must be enabled for the individual blog also. This can be done by setting the "Allow Anonymous Users to Comment2 option to "Yes" on the Override/Globals tab of the Advanced Post Settings page of your blog settings.

By default, Community Server will truncate any post (as well as remove the HTML) from the aggregate blog home page if it is over 250 characters.

This is done for a couple of reasons:

To keep the page nice and light. With 25 posts by default, it can get quite large
To keep the UI consistent. Different authors will chose their own fonts, colors, and images. Mix a couple of these together and you can have a mess

Having said that, there may be cases when you want to either increase this value or stop it from happening entirely. The good news is Community Server makes this easy for you.

To make the change, go to your sites control panel, navigate to Administration >> Blogs >> Default Presentation: (/controlpanel/BlogAdmin/Options/SkinOptions.aspx).

At the bottom of the form, you will see an area labeled, "Aggregate Post Excerpt Size".

Simply change this value to your desired size and click "Save". If you change the value to zero, Community Server will no longer truncate the post or remove the HTML.

Error when installing license, "...String not recognized as a valid DateTime"

Issue

When attempting to install a license and error message is shown, "An error occured while installing the license file: String was not recognized as a valid DateTime."

Bug / Problem

There was an encoding bug in how Community Server handled dates for international date formats incorrectly

Resolution

The distributed version of Community Server 2007 was patched to fix this. You can also get the patch file here.

Important

When you install the patch file you must remove, overwrite, or delete the previous .DLL.

Who is Community Server's competition?

We get asked this a lot. We think it has to do with fact that there aren't any solutions quite like Community Server and everyone has a burning desire to know "who are you up against". Honestly, our biggest competitor to Community Server is always the previous version of Community Server. This isn't arrogance about ourselves or a view that our competitors are irrelevant, but rather the way we think about our business.

One of the differences between Community Server and other solutions, such as Microsoft's SharePoint or other portal technologies, Community Server can serve both the role of "platform" or "feature". What we mean by this is that you can add Community Server to an existing site just as easily as you can build an entire solution around it. Most "portal" solution revolve around you writing your entire web solution around their platform, we believe people need choices.

At Telligent we're also huge fans of Toyota's internal company slogan "Run scared", which we've taken to mean that you should never be comfortable with today's successes and to constantly innovate. We also believe that there are 2 schools of thought for product development: Customers and Competition. We believe in customer focused product development. Applied together you get our philosophy on product development.

So the reason we don't have a list of competitors on our site is because we're too scared to turn around and look at what our competition is doing and too focused on customers (not competitors) when building our product.

Community Server is different. Ultimately we believe that Community Server is the glue that binds people together online and helps them meet new friends, discover new information, and share their knowledge. We'll keep building software that people want to use and let our competitors focus on building the best comparison charts about each other.
