I did not get a chance to ask while at the event. In particular, I have a question about how SEO is (or is not) impacted when you mark content (e.g. forum post, blog article, comment, etc.) as spam?

    Phil, as far as SEO goes, nothing is done when content is initially flagged as spam/abuse by users. As any other user of the site you would not know that the content was flagged by someone else. This allows users to decide for themselves whether they think a piece of content is abusive or spam. However, once enough people flag it as spam (number of users depends on the flagging users' reputation and the content author's reputation) then the content is automatically removed from the site and sent through a review process. To all users of the site the content will appear to be deleted. Depending on the result of the review process the content will either be permanently deleted if it is determined to be spam/abusive or it will be reinstated if it was found to not be. Once content is reinstated there are again no signs that it was ever flagged as abusive/spam or that it ever went through the appeals process.
