The term "conversations" has been replaced with the term "messages" in many places throughout Telligent Community.
Using the private message feature, if another user has private message notifications enabled, you can send them a private message:
- Via the User - Hover widget that pops up every time you hover your mouse over a username
- The Activity Story Stream options below every story in the stream
- On the user's profile page
Enable private messages in your settings
The Email Options tab of your user Settings page two settings for private messages:
- Enable private message notifications - This is enabled by default. It allows you to receive notifications of private messages sent to you.
- Allow private messages from - Lets you choose whom you want to receive messages from. Options include:
- None (that is, no one can send you private messages)
- Friends only (only users who are your friends can send you private messages)
- All users (any user can send you a private message)
When you use search to find a conversation partner, it searches against both usernames and display names.
Send a message from the User - Hover
When you hover your mouse over another user's name, a pop-up window displays an option for sending that person a private message (if they have it enabled).
- Hover your mouse over another user, whether a friend or not. The User - Hover appears.
- Click Send a private message. A message window opens.
- Type in the subject and text of your message.
- Click Send message. If the user has private message notifications enabled, he/she will see an indicator on their home page that they've received a message.
Your ability to begin a conversation with a user depends upon the user's conversation settings. Users may allow only friends to begin conversations, or the users may not allow anyone in the community to start a conversation with them. If a user allows you to start a conversation, you will find the Conversation link on the user's profile page.
Send a message via the Activity Story Stream
- Locate a user in the Activity Story Stream whom you'd like to message.
- Click Send a private message.
The message window opens.
- Type in the subject and text of your message.
- Click Send message.

- Locate the user's profile page, such as by searching for him/her.
- Locate the Send a private message option under his/her profile picture.
- Click Send a private message. The message window opens.
- Type in the subject and text of your message.
- Click Send message.
View your messages
You can view your incoming messages on the Conversation List, by selecting the Conversations icon on your navigation bar, or by clicking the Messages tab on your user profile. The following example uses the Conversations icon.
- Click the Conversations icon on your navigation bar.
The All Messages page appears.
- On this page, click the new conversation or response (which is highlighted).
The text of the message appears.
You can leave the message read, click Delete, or respond to it.
