To enable chat in release 7.5, simply add and enable the plugin, configure the plugin, and configure the appropriate widgets. Chat occurs on the 7.5 User - Chat widget.

Add the chat plugin to the web folder

  1. Add the Telligent.Evolution.Chat.dll file to the web/bin folder of your Telligent installation.

Enable chat and presence

  1. In the Telligent interface, navigate to Control Panel > System Administration > Site Administration > Site Configuration > Manage Plugins.
  2. Locate the Chat plugin and click the check box to enable it.
  3. Click Configure. The plugin has the following options:

    • Offline Timeout Seconds - Seconds after which a user is marked offline when all of the user's connections are closed. This is a grace period to allow for navigating across pages without interrupting presence even though connections are closing and opening. Default: 10
    • Online Friend List Page Size - Number of online friends shown in the buddy list, sorted by recency of conversation, descending. Default: 15
    • Maximum Group Chat Participants - Maximum number of participants allowed in a group chat session. Default: 10
    • Conversation Life Span - Hours after which a conversation log is no longer appended to, and subsequent chat messages initiate and append to a new conversation. Default: 24
    • Set Online by Default - Whether a user should be auto-logged into chat upon sign-in. A user's own previous preference (when it exists) overrides this. Default: true
  4. Click Save in the configuration dialog box.
  5. Click Save in the Manage Plugins page.

The widgets concerned with chat are:

User - Banner with Presence widget

The User - Banner with Presence replaces the previous User - Banner widget in 7.5 to enable viewing presence and starting chats from links in online friends' user banner. 

  1. To install this widget, as an admin navigate to Control Panel > System Administration > Site Administration > Widget Studio > Replace Widgets.
  2. Choose the theme you want to update.
  3. Select User - Banner.
  4. Select all the widgets containers.
  5. Select User - Banner with Presence as a replacement.
  6. Configure the desired fields.
  7. Click Save.

User - Chat widget

The User - Chat widget enables the online friends list and chat windows.

  1. To install this widget, as an admin navigate to the site home page.
  2. Click Edit Page.
  3. Click Edit Footer.
  4. Search for the User - Chat widget and drag it into the footer.
  5. Select the 'lock' icon toggle to lock the widget in the footer so that it will be inherited.
  6. Click Save Footer.
  7. Click Cancel (next to Save Page) and click OK if it prompts to lose unsaved changes.

User - Hover with Presence widget

The User - Hover with Presence widget lives in the page footer. You will need to replace your current User - Hover widget with this widget to enable  viewing presence and starting chats from links in online friends' user hovers.

  1. To install this widget, as an admin navigate to Control Panel > System Administration > Site Administration > Widget Studio > Replace Widgets.
  2. Choose the theme you want to update.
  3. Select User - Hover.
  4. Select all the widgets containers. (By default, there will only be one.)
  5. Select User - Hover with Presence as a replacement.
  6. Configure the desired fields.
  7. Click Save.
