In Telligent Enterprise, Mail Gateway trims quoted text from replies posted via email. Only the text above the quote line is posted.

To install multiple instances of this service, see the multiple instances of services article.

If you use IIS7 for your site, you must also install IIS6 on the server for Mail Gateway. IIS6 furnishes the required SMTP mailbox, while IIS7 does not have this capability. In this case, you would run the IIS6 MSI and point to that directory in the mailgateway.config file per the SMTP mail gateway installation instructions.

With this procedure, you can configure the Telligent Mail Gateway to work with Microsoft Exchange or with a mailbox such as POP3, IMAP, or SMTP.

Additionally, you can configure Mail Gateway mailing lists for forums.

Follow this sequence of procedures:

  1. Perform the Mail Gateway configuration steps that are common to all installations.
  2. Follow either the specific sub-procedure for Microsoft Exchange or for a POP3/IMAP/SMTP mailbox drop.
  3. Finish the procedure with steps that are common to all Mail Gateway installations.
  4. Set up a mailing list to use with the Mail Gateway.

Begin configuring the Mail Gateway with steps common to all installations

When you set up Mail Gateway, you must do four things in the beginning of any installation:

    • Copy the contents of the MailGateway folder in your Telligent Enterprise package to the desired install location (C:\Program Files (x86)\Telligent\Mail Gateway is recommended).
    • Enable email and set the login information for your outgoing mail (SMTP server) on the website.
    • Enable Mail Gateway and give it the remote access code to user for being entered later in the mailgateway.config as the passPhrase.
    • Specify your domain.

    Here are the required steps:

    1. Copy the contents of the MailGateway folder in your Telligent Enterprise package to the desired install location (c:\Program Files (x86)\Telligent\Mail Gateway is recommended).
    2. Run install.bat located in the folder. (Note: If you had Mail Gateway installed from a previous version of Telligent Enterprise or Telligent Evolution, you will need to uninstall it before installing it for this release. Be sure to back up your settings first.)
    3. Enable email and Mail Gateway from Telligent Enterprise's Control Panel:
      1. Navigate to Control Panel Dashboard > System Administration > Site Administration > Setup > Email Settings.
      2. Set Enable Email to Yes.
      3. Specify your SMTP server.
      4. Set any SMTP login information in the SMTP Login Info section.
      5. Set Enable Mail Gateway to Yes.
      6. Specify the password that will be used to connect to the Mail Gateway service in Remote Access Code.
      7. Specify the domain name that emails will be sent to and from (for example, mysite.com or community.mysite.com).

Continue with a Mail Gateway configuration procedure specific to your installation

Continue with the correct specialized configuration procedure, depending upon your installation. If you do not see your specific email server mentioned, you can use the standard POP3 or IMAP configuration.

Then continue to the next section.

    Finish configuring the Mail Gateway

    1. In the Mail Gateway installation, open the mailgateway.config  file for editing to add the site settings so Mail Gateway can connect correctly.
    2. In the <Sites> section, add your own entry similar to
      <Site name="Short name"
      serviceUrl="http://yoursite.com/utility/maildrop.asmx"
      passPhrase="remoteAccessCode" />
      where:
      1. Name - Unique short name for your site (for example, "My Telligent Enterprise Site").
      2. serviceURL - Web service within your Telligent Enterprise site.
      3. passPhrase - Remote access code specified in the Mail Gateway configuration within your Telligent Enterprise site.

        Optional parameters:

      • username - A username to use if the site requires basic authentication.
      • password - The password for the basic authentication user.
      • useDefaultCredentials - An option to use the service identity for Windows Authentication sites.
      • readFromDirectory - The path to a local SMTP mail drop.
    3. Optionally, adjust the settings or how often Mail Gateway updates the site configuration and checks for messages.
      1. updateConfigurationInterval - How often (in minutes) the service checks the site's configuration for updates to the list of mailboxes from which to download messages.
      2. pollMessagesInterval - How often (in minutes) Mail Gateway connects to the mailbox(es) to download messages to process.
      3. garbageInterval - We recommend that you do NOT change this setting. How often (in minutes) Mail Gateway performs cleanup operations to free memory.
      4. statusInterval - How often (in minutes) Mail Gateway writes status messages to the log files, including basic information like memory usage.
    4. Open the Services Control Panel and start the Telligent Mail Gateway service (which is configured to run automatically on server load). If you do not want this to run automatically, we recommend that you set the start-up type to Manual or Disabled.
    5. The service installs by default to "Log on as" the Network Service account; you will need to ensure this user has write permission to the installation folder (for example, c:\Program Files (x86)\Telligent\Mail Gateway) so it can read the configuration files and write to its log. Also, if using a local file system mail drop, the Network Service user will need modify permission to that folder as well (for example, c:\inetpub\mailroot\drop).
    6. Ensure your email server is configured to handle the email.

Finally, create the mailing list for the Mail Gateway to communicate with the forums.

    Install multiple Mail Gateway services

By default, the service name is "Telligent Mail Gateway." Windows requires that service names be unique on the system. If multiple Mail Gateway services are needed on one machine, the name will have to be changed for subsequent services.

    1. Copy the MailGateway folder to a second location. Give the copied folder a name that makes it easy to identify.
    2. Update the configuration files as necessary.
    3. Open install.bat in Notepad.
    4. Add /name="Name For Second Service" after --install. The contents will look similar to this: Telligent.MailGateway.exe --install /name="Name For Second Service" %*
    5. Do the same for uninstall.bat, except instead of --install, it will have --uninstall.
      1. Telligent.MailGateway.exe --uninstall /name="Name for Second Service" %*
    6. Run install.bat to install the second service.

This procedure can be followed multiple times to add any number of Mail Gateway services.

Create a mailing list for a forum

You can create either an active mode or passive mode mailing list for a forum.

Active mode is the default setting for the mailing list. All emails sent to the forum will be sent to all members of the forum.

Passive mode is usually used to document a conversation into the online forum without actually sending the post to every member. The messages are sent to the passive mode distribution list - letting the corporate email setup distribute them to the right parties.

Create an active mailing list for a forum

This configuration is the default setting for a Mail Gateway mailing list.

    1. Navigate to Control Panel Dashboard > Forum Administration and choose the forum for which you want to create a mailing list.
    2. Click Edit next to the forum.
    3. Click the Mailing List tab.
    4. Enable a mailing list for the forum by setting Enable as a mailing list to Yes.
    5. Specify the email address the mailing list will use in List Email Address. The domain you specified when enabling Mail Gateway is used here.
    6. We recommend that you specify the Mailing list name that is shown in the subject line of every email sent to and from the forum, but it is not required.
    7. We recommend that you specify text that is appended to the end of email messages sent from this forum in Email footer, but it is not required.
    8. Click Save. It may take up to 15 minutes for the settings to take effect due to caching.

Create a passive mailing list for a forum

No emails will be sent out to subscribers unless the forum post is made from the Web interface.

The text under the Passive Mode Email Address field in the Mailing List tab does not mean Mail Gateway looks at the address you specify for new posts. It only looks at the list email address. Emails sent to the list email address and the passive email address won't be sent to subscribers. In nearly all circumstances, these two email addresses should be the same.

    5. Specify the distribution list email address the mailing list will use in List Email Address.
    8. Set Enable Passive Mode to Yes.
    9. Enter the Passive Mode Email Address. The address should be the same as the List Email address in most circumstances.
    10. Click Save. It may take up to 15 minutes for the settings to take effect due to caching.
