Asking a question

From the perspective of creating a forum thread, the setup of the forum determines what you'll see on the Create/edit post form. If the forum supports both questions and discussions, you'll see an option on the post form to specify which kind of thread you're starting.

If the forum is devoted only to Q&A, the post form won't have the option to specify the post type.

Answer a question, confirm an answer, or reject an answer

Question forums provide more answer options than discussion forums do. In a Q&A forum, you can:

  • Reply to a thread.
  • Suggest that your reply is the answer.
  • Verify that a reply is the answer.
  • Reject a verified answer.

Provide a normal reply to a thread

  1. In the Forum - Thread List widget on the forum Home Page, click the thread you are interested in replying to. The forum thread page appears.



  2. Enter your reply in the reply text field.
  3. Click Reply. The question has a grey status bubble beside the thread title, and the reply increments the reply count beside the question topic in the forum Home Page Forum - Thread List.

Provide a suggested answer to a thread

  1. In the Forum - Thread List widget on the forum Home Page, click the thread you are interested in replying to. The forum thread page appears.



  2. Enter your reply in the reply text field.
  3. If you are confident in your answer, click the Suggested answer check box.
  4. Click Reply. Your reply appears with a yellow bubble around it below the question. If you mouse over the bar at the top of the answer, it says, "Suggested answer."



    On the forum Home Page Forum - Thread List, the thread takes on a yellow status bubble beside the thread title. Mousing over the title reveals a "Suggested answer" bubble.

Verify the answer to a thread

The originator of the question can verify a suggested answer on the thread.

  1. In the Forum - Thread List widget on the forum Home Page, click the thread you want to verify. The forum thread page appears.
  2. Scroll down to the correct suggested answer and mouse over the poster's name in the yellow answer bar. The "Did this answer your question?" prompt appears.



  3. Click Yes or No. If you click No, the yellow answer bubble is removed. If you click Yes, the bubble turns green. The status bar in the post says, "This is marked as an answer." In the Forum - Thread List, the status bubble beside the thread turns green, and if you mouse over the title (which is also green), it will also say "Verified answer."

Reject a verified answer to a thread

The originator of the question can reject a verified answer.

  1. In the Forum - Thread List widget on the forum Home Page, click the verified answer thread. The forum thread page appears.
  2. Scroll down to the verified answer and mouse over the poster's name in the green answer bar. The "Reject answer" option appears.



  3. Click Reject answer. The green "answered" bubble is removed, and the thread status turns back to grey in the Forum - Thread List.
