If the emoticon property is enabled for your forums (Control Panel > System Administration > Site Administration > Site Configuration > Advanced Configuration > Post Settings "Allow Emoticons"), you can add emoticons to your forum threads by enclosing the emoticon code in brackets. For example, if you bracket this text:
