To help you understand the value of this new product release, we have provided detailed information about the enhancements and bug fixes included.

If you are not currently running Telligent Community 5.0, your upgrade to Telligent Community 5.5 includes all fixes and enhancements made for Telligent Community 5.0 and Telligent Community 5.0 SP1.

If you are not currently running Telligent Enterprise 2.0, your upgrade to Telligent Enterprise 2.5 includes all fixes and enhancements made for Telligent Enterprise 2.0 and Telligent Enterprise 2.0 SP1.

     

    Changes

    We have made a few changes with the new versions of Telligent Community and Telligent Enterprise that may impact the way your existing community or communities function. Consider these carefully before you upgrade. If you have any questions about these changes, please contact Telligent Support.

    1. Group owners can delete groups. By default, when you upgrade or install a new community, all group owners can delete a group and all content and membership settings without working through an administrator (IDs 3, 527). If you do not want to grant this level of control, simply remove the Group - Delete Groups permission from the Owners role for the group.

    2. Forum cannot be a URL. In previous versions, members who were administrators of any forum (site administrators or group owners) had the option to create a forum as a URL. With this option turned on, the forum would simply become a shortcut to a particular URL and would not display forum posts since these were not actually forums. When you upgrade to this latest version, any forum that had been designated as a URL is converted to an actual forum with a description that reads: "This forum was previously a link to <URL>." We recommend that if you want to highlight content near a forum thread list that is not in a forum, create a Generic Content widget with the additional information. (ID 437)

    3. User announcements no longer supported. In Community Server versions (and optionally, manually surfaced for Telligent Community and Telligent Enterprise), a user could enter an announcement subject and body and post it to his or her profile, providing a very limited "announcement" experience (did not allow ratings, tags or comments). When you upgrade to the latest version of Telligent Community and Telligent Enterprise, all announcements are automatically migrated to personal blogs (in a Personal Blogs group at the Site Root level). The API endpoint support for announcements has also been removed.

    4. Blog pages no longer supported. Blog pages have been replaced with blog content pages, which provide a much richer experiences and allow blog owners to create completely custom pages. When you upgrade to the latest version of Telligent Community and Telligent Enterprise, existing blog pages are unchanged, but they are converted to standard blog posts and tagged so that you can easily find them.     5. HTML is no longer supported in group and application descriptions, and descriptions are limited to 256 characters. To eliminate user interface issues, descriptions for groups and applications (blogs, forums, wikis, files) must not contain HTML and must be limited to 256 characters (ID 1353). On upgrade:

      1. Any group description that includes HTML (formatted differently from a standard text in the rich text editor) and/or is more than 256 characters is removed from the Group Banner widget and placed instead in a Generic Content widget on the page.
      2. Any application description that is more than 256 characters is truncated to that new limit. We recommend that you first run two queries on your database to capture any application descriptions that have more than 256 characters and adjust them prior to upgrading:

    6. Search. You must install Solr since it is now required to run any community built on the Telligent Evolution platform, providing a highly scalable and high-performance solution. It enables all information retrieval components built into the site (e.g., group selection, user selection for membership and starting conversations, application section, etc.). You can still replace the search engine component of Solr with a third-party search component such as Microsoft FAST or Vivisimo.

    Enhancements

    Your community participants will notice several enhancements in the experience for both Telligent Community 5.5 and Telligent Enterprise 2.5:

    Quickly publish a blog post, discussion or question in a forum, start a wiki page or upload a file. Your favorite content areas and those you most recently posted to are listed for easy access.

    Simplified media sharing

    		 In one step, make popular YouTube, Vimeo or many other videos available to the community. Simply enter the URL to the video in a post; we recognize the format and display a video player. We now support mp4 in addition to other common video formats.
    3 Forum thread muting When you're subscribed to a forum, you get an email each time a new thread is created or when people reply to an existing thread. If the replies to a particular thread are not interesting to you, you can one-click mute the thread (from either the email or on site) and the email notifications for that one thread stop.
    4 Simplified forum experience
    • If you start typing a reply to a forum in the quick reply text box, but then want to move to advanced editing, what you've typed is not lost. And the reply text boxes automatically expand as you type more text (rather than showing a scrollbar).
    • The buttons for suggest and verify an answer are replaced with a question at the bottom of posts. You can now suggest an answer from a quick reply using the Suggest as answer check box, and there is a new banner at the top of each thread to indicate its status.
    5 Start a conversation When starting a conversation with another community member, it is now very easy to find whom you want to include in the conversation. We now search against both display names and usernames rather than just usernames.
    6 Rich text editor

    Inserting images is now really easy. and ordered lists now follow the standard convention of 1, a, A, i, I for numbering. We've simplified the toolbar to remove the options you have available in the right-click contextual menu.
    7 Improved search  The quick search drop-down results now include, in addition to content, a list of places that show content matching your search terms (e.g., groups, blogs, forums, wikis and files).

    In addition to significant performance improvements - especially for communities with more than 100 groups - and fixes to high-priority customer-reported bugs, Telligent Community 5.5 and Telligent Enterprise 2.5 include valuable enhancements that affect all audiences within your community. For site administrators and group owners, new features provide additional flexibility:

    • Within a community using Windows authentication, you can now access the actual logged-on Windows user through httpcontext.current.user (ID 563)

    Extensibility enhancements for developers

      Telligent Evolution Platform 5.5 ships with more efficient and effective core functions as well as new endpoints for data access. (Note that while we have updated the code, all previous code will continue to work.)

      Updated core code

      1. File extensions. All requests into the V2 API now require an XML or JSON extension. This move requires developers to be more explicit, but in return the API becomes much more obvious and some URL processing and interpretation confusion is removed. 
      2. JSONP is now fully supported.
      3. HttpPost updates. In previous versions of the V2 API, updates (create, update, delete) were in XML or JSON form. Starting with Release 5.5, any update - regardless of the developer's protocol choice - uses standard HTTP post parameters. As a result, creating and updating content in Telligent Evolution 5.5 is much simpler. 
      4. Include/exclude. Telligent Evolution addresses the ever-present Web-service tradeoff of heavy payload vs. requiring multiple requests by allowing developers to explicitly include or exclude specific properties.
      5. Usernames or UserIDs. For any endpoint request for information about a specific user, you can use either the user's User ID or his/her username.
